Steps to take after a car accident
1) Request police response. You can call “311” in a non-emergency situation or “911” if there are injuries. Once the police arrives, request to have an auto accident report filed. The officer will assists in determining which party is “at-fault.”
2) Exchange information. Get the name, address, and telephone number of every person involved in the accident, as well as any witnesses. Make sure to also get the vehicle and insurance information for the other party involved in the accident.
3) Make no admission. Do not discuss the accident or your injuries with anyone other than the police and medical responders. Do not make any statements as to fault to anyone. Simply describe what happened. Refrain from posting any information about your accident on social media networks. Do not provide any statements to the adverse insurance company.
4) Take pictures of the accident scene. If it is safe to do so, before the vehicles are moved, take pictures of the damage to your vehicle and other vehicles involved. If possible, get as much of the street view in the pictures, which may be useful later in supporting your statement of how the accident occurred.
5) Seek medical attention immediately. A thorough physical examination by a medical professional immediately after the accident is very important. The extent of your injuries may not be clear or readily apparent right after an accident because of the initial shock so it is important to get examined right away. If necessary, request an ambulance or proceed to the nearest emergency room to be evaluated.
6) Make arrangements to have your vehicle repaired. If your vehicle requires a tow, keep all receipts of any out-of-pocket expenses to submit for reimbursement. Alternatively, some tow truck companies will tow the car on a lien so that you do not have to pay any fees upfront.
